Why Gunner’s Moon?

Why Gunner’s Moon?

In high school and college the moon had some romantic connotations that one strived to take advantage of, but it did not have a name, an identity. When I started flying, the bright moon got a title “Commander’s Moon.” While slightly derogatory, it stressed that the older pilots would only fly on those nights they could see the ground clearly. It was a pleasure to fly under a moon that bright, seeing the world through the lens of flight, but under a different light. I still enjoy flying, or even driving, under that full moon. It is such a surreal effect.

When I started flying in combat, it became the “Gunner’s Moon.” It was not a friendly connotation, as it meant that you were being back lit to show your aircraft and its location so the gunners could more easily take aim.  I view a website as something like that. You put your thoughts, comments and creative talents on display for others to easily see. And to take the occasional shot. Hence, the Gunner’s Moon.

My passions, besides the relationships in my life, are airplanes, cars, photography, guns, all things mechanical. In other words, the man toys. I was told most of my life the only difference between men and boys are the price and the size of their toys. Amen, brother. I have not run out of pixie dust yet. Just a kid in a “rode hard and put away wet” body.  Many have mentored me in the pursuit of excellence and pleasure, and many have I mentored as payback. This is but another opportunity to perhaps mentor those of a new generation through sharing of my interests, experience, and talents. Please enjoy.
